Message from the Board

Hello fellow Leaguers,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! 2025 is quickly coming to an end.

We are sending an extra newsletter this year since there are some important things going on before the end of the year and early in 2026.

It's been a busy year with lots of members manning voter registration tables throughout the valley. There will be even more events in 2026.

Our very first Zoom presentation in coordination with Yavapai College's OLLI program was held in September, focusing on GenZ voters with Hana Ben-Shabat as the keynote speaker and several local young voters as panelists. It was well-attended by people across the country.

Our next program will be entitled “The Water Below: A Community Dialogue” focused on current groundwater in communities across the Verde Valley. It will be a virtual presentation on January 29th from 4:00 - 5:30 PM. Registration will be available through Yavapai College's OLLI program and is free.

We had a fun social event in October hosted by Gail Digate and attended by over 20 members. We discussed areas where members can get involved and got several new volunteers. We are planning another social in the spring at a local winery. We would like to have more and are looking for a volunteer to plan some. If you are interested, send an email to lwvnaz@gmail.com.

Enjoy the holidays, however you celebrate!

Yours in league,

Kathy Henry

LWVNAZ MEMBERS REACH OUT TO GEN Z

A strategic priority of LWVAZ for the next several years is reaching out and engaging young voters in the work of the League of Women Voters.

We recognize that a critical component of successfully reaching out to and engaging young voters is the development of positive and mutually beneficial relationships between mentors and students.

As “experienced” voters, we have much to share with young people as they, in turn, help us gain new knowledge and insights into what is important to their generation.  Undoubtedly, the act of listening to each other is integral to the success of this important League initiative.

During the past six months, LWVNAZ members have been meeting with government teachers and students at two area high schools to develop a multi-year partnership designed to bring together groups of interested students with LWVNAZ mentors to:

* conduct voter registration drives on campus and in the community
* participate in local candidate forums
* explore VOTE 411
* learn and practice effective ways to contact and speak with elected officials at various levels of government from local councils to Congress
* investigate how to analyze proposed legislation and ballot initiatives
* participate in and contribute to local league board and committee activities

Entitled LWVNAZ Young Voters Engagement Project, voter registration activities on campus will get underway during second semester at Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA) and Mingus Union High School (MUHS).

If you are interested in serving as a mentor to highly motivated and thoughtful potential young voters by sharing your experience in any of the areas listed above, please send an email to lwvnaz@gmail.com indicating your interest.  A member of the Project Design Team will be in contact with you after January 15, 2026.

One Person One Vote

One Person One Vote - a program aimed at electing the President by direct popular vote.  For a short term approach LWV is supporting the growing Popular Vote Compact which is an agreement by states that electoral votes will be awarded to the popular vote winner.  Several more states are needed for this to become effective.  The longer term approach is a Constitutional Amendment to abolish the Electoral College.  This is a big, challenging goal that will take great effort, but accomplishing important things usually does.  To learn more, go to One Person One Vote Campaign or watch the League panel discussion here.
